Plan your AWS Career @ Training Basket

Amazon Web Services has been the market leader in providing Cloud offerings for almost a decade now. At the moment, there are almost 100 services as part of AWS offering which spans from Storage and Compute services to AI and Machine Learning oriented service.

The fast-growing offerings have accelerated the demand for AWS Experts and Engineers in the Job and Cloud market, both in India and across the globe. It is high time to dedicate a few minutes to discuss where an individual stands in terms of their IT career and what one should look at to pursue a successful career working with AWS.

We at Training Basket have recently conducted an in-person seminar on ‘Plan your AWS Career’ and have received a good response. We would also be conducting a seminar again soon. Register for the seminar.
During the seminar, We had received multiple queries and concerns, which I am bringing forward through this blog along with a short brief of the webinar.

As part of the seminar, I had brought forward the need due to which Cloud has emerged and how Cloud is the way forward for IT. I had also discussed the Cloud Market Trends and Job Market Trends around Cloud. I had then moved on to discuss major providers and flew over a few of the widely used AWS services followed by the skills needed to be an Architect, Developer, System Administrator and DevOps Engineer on AWS. I had then discussed the certification tracks that AWS offers and opened the floor for questions.

As part of our Training Career, over the years many have asked questions on similar lines and with the seminar, I realized that there are many seasoned IT professionals who still have the questions unanswered. Here are the questions answered for you –

Q1. I am a .NET Developer with around 8 years of experience and what do I need to learn to be an AWS Developer?

A1. The answer would be the corresponding AWS SDK. AWS has support for almost all the high-level programming and scripting languages. Any developer who is looking to develop applications using AWS services needs to master the corresponding SDK. Along with the SDK knowledge, one also needs to have a detailed understanding of the services intended to use and corresponding best practices.

Q2. I am a storage admin with more than 10 years of experience and right now my organization is looking to move to Cloud. What would be my role in the new technology scenario?

A2. At the moment, many IT organizations are going through Digitization and Cloud Transformation. As Cloud is just redefining the business model, the role in the organization would be similar, but with AWS Services. A Storage Admin would still be a Storage Admin on AWS working with EBS, EFS and dealing with disk throughput. Most of the tools used prior to moving to AWS would still be valid. But, one needs to get a capability matrix understanding on AWS.

Q3. What certifications does AWS provide and how will it be useful for a Windows Administrator?

A3. Getting certified on AWS is a mandatory credential that companies look at. It depicts one’s capability in working with AWS services. AWS certificates cover a wide range of jobs by dividing them into Architect, SysOps and Developer categories. As a Windows Administrator, one might be looking at managing Windows infrastructure on AWS and automating the same. The SysOps Associate Certification followed by DevOps Professional Certification would be ideal to be an experienced System Administrator.

Q4. What are specialization certifications and what is the eligibility to take up these certifications?

A4. AWS currently offers two specialization certifications viz. AWS Certified Big Data – Speciality and AWS Certified Advanced Networking – Speciality. These are professional level certifications, so one needs to be associate level certified in any of the available tracks.

Q5. After clearing the certification, will I get a good pay hike internally or when I move to a different organization?

A5. With the growing need for Cloud Experts, having a certificate would be an added advantage to stand out of the crowd within the organization, as well as in the Job market. With many skills going obsolete, the industry standard hike while moving companies is on the decline. But, the decline would not affect a professional with proven skills and appropriate certifications.
